Prepare for 'hangover' panel industry warned
Article Abstract:
Speakers at the 1996 Particleboard/Composite Materials Symposium warned of price drops due to growth in panel product manufacturing capacity. Medium-density fiberboard (MDF) manufacturing capacity, 4 million cu m in 1986 and 14 million cu m in 1995, will grow to over 20 million cu m in 2000 for a market of less than 18 million cu m. Oriented-strand board (OSB) production of 800 million sq ft in 1981 and 10.9 billion sq ft in 1994 will grow to 18 billion sq ft by 2000. Technical issues, including the use of x-rays, MDF water resistance, and particleboard made from wheat straw and MDI resin were also addressed.

New-generation OSB mill makes long strands
Article Abstract:
Jager Strandboard LP's Wawa, Ontario-based mill manufactures long strands that boost the quality of lower density boards. The mill softens 106-in logs prior to their conversion into 6 in long and 0.25 in thick strands. Jager uses special equipment to dry, blend, wax, coat the strands with phenolic resin and press them. The mill manufactures about 400 mil sq ft of oriented strand board (OSB) annually. Jager gets the OSB wood consisting of 80% aspen and 20% birch from a woodbasket provided by the Ontario government.
